About the Project
Proyecto S.U.A.V.E. is comprised of a collaboration of students and volunteers passionate about creating a positive change in a community in Tijuana, Mexico at the local level. Its founding members, Angela Tomlinson, Lilia Stone, and Jessica Guerrero, created Proyecto S.U.A.V.E to health and well-being. Proyecto S.U.A.V.E provides free physical fitness classes with an emphasis on Zumba, nutritional education, and is in the process of implementing a sustainable garden for the members of the community.
During 2014, the three leaders were part of the Blum Cross Border Initiative at UCSD, which looked at inequalities in low socioeconomic bordering neighbor communities in the San Diego Region. Throughout their research, they witnessed the challenges the communities face, and believe they are not the only ones in the area to have these difficulties. By implementing change in one community, Proyecto S.U.A.V.E. aspires to make a lasting impact and eventually further expanding their efforts to other communities.
Proyecto S.U.A.V.E is currently executing a pilot program in which it hired a set of skilled experts in their fields to provide these classes to members of the community. Not only will it promote health and wellness, but it also creates a sense of community among the participants of these workshops.
